Adventure Games
Adventure video games are the most story-driven game genre till date. They are not what the dictionary defines as “adventure”. Adventure games are all about unravelling stories, exploring worlds and solving puzzles. They mainly focus on puzzle solving within a narrative framework, generally with few action elements.
Not what you thought? Well, these days many games push traditional genre boundaries in new and interesting ways while still remaining adventure games at their core. Boring much? Nope, not at all. Adventure games are very interesting and are very well known for their original stories. There are three elements that are always there in an adventure game and some of its sub-genres focus more on one aspect than another. The three characteristics are:
1. Story Narration: In adventure games, the story is given a lot of importance. Plots, tone and setting are as crucial as they are in movies and novels.
2. Puzzles: Puzzles come in all shapes and sizes, but here are some of the most common ones
- Inventory puzzles: accumulating an inventory of items that are then used to solve puzzles.
- Dialogue-based puzzles: interacting with secondary characters to accumulate clues and directions, or persuade them to help your cause.
- Environmental puzzles: analysing and altering your surroundings in the game directly.
- Non-contextual logic puzzles: standalone challenges can include anything from sliders to chess to jigsaws.
While a lot of adventure games contain basic inventory and logic puzzles, some games provide more exotic types of challenges too. Now it’s getting more interesting, isn’t it?
3. Exploration: Adventure games usually require exploration to a level, depending on the type of interface, like typing in the directions. Modern adventures provide more intuitive ways to get around, like moving cursor on the screen etc.
There are very many different adventure games out in the market these days. If you are newly venturing into playing Adventure games, it’s best to try a few different types of adventure games and see what kind you like the most. But what I can tell you for sure is that there is definitely an adventure game out there that will surely fascinate and entice you, no matter what your interests are!
