Insights on Casual Video Games
Have you ever heard of Casual video games?? I am sure you have played a lot of them without realising that they fall into this category of video games. Well, Casual Games are a type of video games that do not require a major time investment to play, win, and enjoy. They have simpler rules, shorter sessions, and require less learned skills than hardcore games. They are web-based and are usually found on either smartphones and tablets, or personal computers. They are typically targeted at a wide, mass-market and more niche audience of casual or hobbyist gamers.
These games can normally be played in small periods of time unlike other hardcore games, which sometimes provide more than 40 hours of gameplay to reach the final level of the game. Do you remember Microsoft’s “Solitaire”? I am very sure you do. Everybody with a Windows PC, back then in the 90s, must have played it at least a couple of times if not a hundred times; Well, that’s what a study says. Solitaire is considered to be the first highly successful casual game on a PC. It was released in the year 1990, and has drawn around 400 million gamers.
A lot of different game genres have included Casual games as a sub-genre. Here are some very famous game categories that have very successful casual games:
Popular casual games under Puzzle Video games include the Bejeweled series, Collapse! Series, etc. Similarly, Mystery Case Files series, Mortimer Beckett series, Hidden Expedition series fall under Hidden object games genre; Adventure games have Dream Chronicles series, Aveyond series,etc; Diner Dash series, Delicious series fall under Strategy video games; Arcade & action games category includes some very popular casual games such as Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle series, Feeding Frenzy series, etc; Word & trivia games like Bookworm, Bonnie’s Bookstore and Card & board games like Solitaire, Slingo Quest, Lottso! Deluxe, Luxor Mahjong are some more casual games that have been on the top of the game in the industry for a really long time.
